MUNICIPAL BAND
TRAINING OF YOUTHS. MUCH SUCCESS ACHIEVED. In view of the fact that the Master-\ ton Municipal Band had lost so many men, who had gone into camp with the forces and would lose several more with later Reinforcements it was decided to train youths under military age. Some 16 to 18 boys were taken on and trained by the conductor, Mr G. W. Hutchinson. These boys had put in long hours of practice. With a view to showing the scope of the work being carried out, sixty parents and friends were entertained at a concert organised by the boys of the band on Wednesday night. The many items which included songs, recitations, cornet solos and duets, mouth organ solos and selections by the boys’ band revealed that the band possessed some outstanding talent. As a token of appreciation to the conductor, Mr Hutchinson, the secretary of the boys’ band, made a presentation of a pipe and a tobacco pouch. Mr Hutchinson suitably acknowledged the gift. As the senior band’s ranks are depleted the vacancies will be filled by the trained boys. There are still 5 or 6 vacancies for older boys who are big enough to carry instruments.
