BADMINTON
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION MEETING ST MATTHEW’S CLUB WIN COMPETITION. PAST SEASON REVIEWED. The president, Mr E. K. Eastwood, presided over an executive meeting of the management committee of the Wairarapa Badminton Association held in Masterton last night. There were also present Messrs B. IVI. Hurley (vicepresident), P. Hawksworth, W. L. Harrington and C. J. Carle (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs P. Rishworth, G. B. Peterson, and E. McAlpine (Martinborough). A letter was received from the New Zealand Badminton Federation asking all associations for a list, compiled to the end of 1940. of members serving with the forces and also advice of any funds which might have been donated or loaned free of interest to the Government. The matter was left in the hands ol the secretary, who was instructed to communicate with clubs and forward the required information to the Federation. It was pointed out that a large number of local players had either gone overseas or were in camp. The association had also made an interest free loan of £5 to the Government. The treasurer (Mr C. J. Carle) submitted a financial statement as at August 31, which showed a credit cash balance of £l5 12s 3d. Included in the assets was £5 in Government Stock. Affiliation fees had shown the expected decline.
On the motion of Mr Eastwood, seconded by Mr Hurley the report wa; adopted and the treasurer was thanked for his work in that, connection.
The secretary reported that the inter-club competition run in one grade, namely B, had resulted in keen competition and had proved an outstanding success. St Matthew’s Club went through all rounds without a loss. Masterton was second, Red Statthird. and Martinborough fourth. Members expressed pleasure at the excellent results of the competition and considered that an endeavour be made to keep the event going next year. Interprovincial matches, both home and away had been played against the Manawatu Association, and had proved a great success. Wairarapa had won both matches. In addition many interclub matches had been played against Pahiatua and the visits interchanged had been of considerable benefit to all clubs concerned.
It was decided that St Matthew's Club be awarded the A grade interclub competition cup which was not competed for this season. An invitation was received from the St Matthew's Club for the president of the Association to present the cup a a Yankee tournament and end of season wind up function in the ’Parish Hall on Monday night, September 30 The invitation was accepted and the secretary was asked to have to cup engraved. Other members of the executive also accepted an invitation to be present.
