EKETAHUNA

CARD PARTY IN AID OF PATRIOTIC FUNDS. ("Times-Age” Special.) A most successful “Flag 500" party was held in the Anglican Schoolroom on Monday by the Eketahuna Ladies’ Patriotic Committee. All the tables were filled and those present spent an enjoyable time. The hall had been decorated with spring flowers by Mrs Murray Ansley. The card tournament competition was ably controlled by Miss B. M. Gallagher (Kaiparotc). At the conclusion of the games the president of the committee, Miss M. Anderson, presented the prizes, which were donated by Mrs E. Albrecfitsen and Miss Anderson, to Mr and Mrs N. Williams and Mr and Mrs W. Brown respectively. Mr Christie appealed to those present to help the committee in every way possible'and thanked the members for the enjoyable time they had spent. Several songs were then sung by Mr Max Smith, accompanied by Miss Muriel Smith, and these were much appreciated. A short community sing was also held, Mrs G. Hansen presiding at the piano. A savoury supper was provided by the ladies. PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE MEETING AT NIREAHA. The Nireaha Ladies' Sub-committee of the Patriotic Committee met recently. Christmas parcels for overseas troops were packed and forwarded, the district quota being exceeded. The resignation of Mrs P. Wilkin, on account of home duties, was received with regret. Mrs Wilkins has given generous support to various organisations and her assistance will be much missed. Thanks were extended to Mrs S. R. Blewett, who donated articles to be raffled in aid of patriotic funds.

CRICKET CLUB LACK OF PLAYERS. Mr H. Smith presided at the annual meeting of the Eketahuna Cricket Club. The attendance was small. Owing to the loss of players due to many of them having gone overseas with the New Zealand forces, and the lack of new members, it was decided to hold in abeyance the entry of the club into competition cricket. Friendly games will probably be played throughout the season, and if there is a chance later of securing enough players an entry into the competition would be considered. Another meeting will be held at a later date. Mr Smith (president) expressed his regret at the loss of players and the non-entry of the club into the Bush Cricket Association’s competition. He stated that it was impossible to field a team in the circumstances and the withdrawal from competition cricket was imperative. An election of officers was not held. GOLF CLUB COMPETITION RESULTS. Competition results are as follow: — Senior championship: The final in the senior championship will be played between P. Page and P. Bouzaid. As both these players are at the top of their form at present, a stern tussle is expected. Ladies’ senior championship: Miss N. Greathead and Miss W. Dickson will contest the final. Junior men’s championship: The final is to be decided between R. Dickson and F. Mcßride.

Ladies’ Herbert Cup competition: This competition was won by Miss W. Dickson, who narrowly defeated Miss E. Simmers in the final. Medal competition: The best card handed in on Saturday was that of B. Bradley| who returned a net 68. Challenge for Gregorie Cup: On Sunday a team of ten players will play a challenge match against the Pahiatua Golf Club for the Gregorie Cup. Eketahuna will be able to place a fairly strong team in the field and confidently expects to bring the cup home. A Stableford bogey competition will be played on Saturday. Personal Items. Mrs R. Payne, Alfredton Road, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs F. Hooper, Stanley Street, is visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs L. Houlbrooke, Tiraumea, have now taken up their residence in town. Mr E. Wilkin, has returned to Atea from Palmerston North. On a recent evening the friends of Mr Ray Hodder gathered at the residence of Mr H. R. Nordell, Atea, to bid him farewell and wish him good luck on his entry into Trentham Military Camp. Mr J. Burr, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr Hodder with r money belt, as a slight token of the esteem in which he is held. Mr Hodder suitably acknowledged the gift. Mr A. E. Bell, Nireaha, who has been ill for some time, is now improving in health. Loss Among Dairy Herds. An epidemic of milk fever and various other ailments have been rife among the dairy herds of the Nireaha district and losses have been above the average.
