ALFREDTON

CARD TOURNAMENT A PATRIOTIC EFFORT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly card tournament was the most successful effort to date, the total takings being £2O 16s, which will be handed to the local Patriotic Society. The winners of the cards were: Ladies, Mrs Harcombe and Mrs Yarrall; men, Messrs H. Burch, V. Payne and G. Godinagh. Messrs Burch and Godinagh won the draw. The various competitions resulted as follow: Tea-set (donated by Mr John McKay), Mrs F. Johnson. This brought in £lO ss. The ham given by Mrs Rolls was won by Mr J. Q- Smith, and realised £2 4s 6d. The chocolates raffled by Mrs Didsbury realised £1 18s 6d, and were won Mr H. Burch. Mr Kebbell announced that the sum of approximately £7O was in hand, and asked for approval of his suggestion to send 10 subscriptions to a weekly paper for a military camp. This was unanimously approved. Personal Items. Barry, the youngest son of Mr H. Rolls, who has been staying with his aunt, Mrs A. Hansen, Eketahuna, is at present in the Pahiatua Hospital, seriously ill with pneumonia. Mr T. Hartley, of the Post Office Staff, Wellington 'is spending his annual leave with his sister, Mrs H. Burch. Mr Nicholls spent last week in Masterton, taking part in the table-tennis tournament there.
