HOME GUARD
ORGANISATION IN MASTERTON DISTRICT COMMITTEE TO BE SET UP. PRIOR TO TRAINING COMING INTO OPERATION. Arrangements regarding the establishment of the Home Guard in the Masterton area were discussed at a meeting yesterday afternoon of representatives of the Masterton Borough Council, the Masterton, Mauriceville and Castlepoint County Councils, the R.S.A.. Trades and Labour Council and Farmers’ Union. The meeting was convened by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, who presided. It was resolved that the following bodies be invited to nominate one representative each to form a committee of the Home Guard in the area of Masterton Borough and Masterton. Mauriceville and Castlepoint Counties: Masterton Borough Council. Masterton, Mauriceville and Castlepoint County Councils, R.S.A., Trades and Labour Council, Farmers’ Union. Opaki Rifle Club and Employers’ Association, such representatives, together with the Parliamentary member for the district, to constitute a committee, with Messrs G. T. O'Hara Smith and J. C. D. Mackley joint hon secretaries, subject to the confirmation of the committee. Mr Jordan stated that the Dominion Commander, Major-General Young, would shortly be visiting Masterton when an opportunity would be taken to discuss with him matters of district and local organisation. Before soliciting enrolments in the Home Guard. Mr Jordan considered the first requisite should be the setting up of the administrative organisation and also that trained instructors should be available to develop the movement, so that when members of the Home Guard were enrolled they would have no period of waiting and training would proceed without any check.
