POTATO CULTIVATION

SOME USEFUL HINTS. I There are many varied and interesting points in regard to the growing of potatoes. Generally a naturally rich and new soil will give better tubers and more crop than an old soil which may have been manured and up to twenty tons per acre has been grown under field conditions in maiden soil. Experiments have proved that five inches is the correct depth to plant and the crop decreased as a deeper or more ‘ shallow planting was made. Whole sets of a medium size are considered best and the best shoots are at the top end of the tuber, the base having few eyes which are generally weaker. The best fertilisers contain super, ammonia and potash. A change of seed is beneficial and sprouted seed is best, though the shoots should be short and not drawn. Sixteen pound weight has been grown from one largo tuber of Robin Adair and fifteen and a-half pounds from one tuber of Arran Cairn, both in local gardens.
