WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Members of the Women’s Institute spent some time the other afternoon in making new garments or renovating and remodelling used ones. Large parcels of clothes were prepared for dispatch to the Lady Galway Appeal. In the absence of the president, Mrs M. Hull presided over the meeting, which opened in the usual way with the Ode to Friendship and the New Zealand Anthem. Mesdames Stan Edmonds and E. Hutchings were appointed delegates to the forthcoming council meeting. The Institute members regretfully declined to act as hostesses but agreed to assist where possible. It was decided that the competitions for’ the ensuing month be date scones and a cotton frock, to be worn. A competition for a ten-line paragraph introducing as many Institute members’ names as possible was won by Mrs A. Weston. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames T. Smith, K. Didsbury and Miss Roberts. The competition for the best bloom resulted: Miss J. Algie, 1; Mrs R. Low, 2; Mrs Napier, 3. The best loaf of bread competition resulted: Mrs A. Napier, 1; Mrs R. Low, 2; Miss J. Algie, 3. A bring and buy stall in aid of thcfunds for soldiers’ parcels was well patronised. CARD PARTY FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS. A smaller number than usual supported the card party for Patriotic Funds, the night being particularly boisterous. The takings were £5. The winners of the cards were: — Ladies: Mrs Hall and Mrs J. Hartley, 1. Men: Mr M. Hull, 1; Messrs E. Seymour, Walker and Rex Rolls, 2. Rex Rolls won in the draw. The prizes were again picture tickets. A ham donated by Mrs Rolls will be competed for at .the next card tournament. Mr R. W. Kebbell kindly donated 2 settings of goose eggs which were won by Eileen Napier and Mrs R. Low. Eileen Napier returned her eggs for re-sale when they brought 4s. Mr John McKay has given a tea-set to be competed for. This will be decided at the next card party. Mrs Didsbury has given a large box of chocolates. The hostesses were Mesdames Didsbury and J. Hartley and Miss Roberts. It has been decided to dispatch nine soldiers’ parcels which a number of ladies will pack next Saturday, and each will contain a 11b. Christmas cake to be baked locally. Personal Items. Sister C. George is spending a holiday in Christchurch prior to going to Hastings. Mr J. Smith, Senr., is staying at “Forest Flat” with his son, Mr J. >B. Smith. Mr and Mrs L. Houlbrooke, “The Homestead,” Tiraumea, have taken up their residence in Eketahuna. Mr and Mrs Gordon Houlbrooke have gone to live at “The Homestead.” Mr G. Houlbrooke will manage this property for his father. Second-Lieutenant T. George has returned to camp after spending the weekend with his mother, Mrs S. M. George. Mrs Alex Edmonds is on holiday at Wellington. Mr and Mrs F. G. Lewis are expected to return from a holiday spent in Gisborne today. Slips on Road. A number of slips have occurred al- ' though the roads are passable with the exception of the Mauriceville-Ihuraua section which was closed in the vicinity of Tikitapu. There is a bad slip on the Summit.
