NOT GOING TO CAMP
RECRUITS IN WAIRARAPA DISTRICT OFFICIAL STATEMENT MADE. DATE OF ENTRY UNCERTAIN. The position regarding men in the Wairarapa going into camp has now been cleared up. The Masterton Defence Office states officially that the men will not be proceeding to camp this week, as they had previously been notified to do, and that advice as to when they would go to camp would be given as soon as it was available. The Masterton office was in communication with the Area Centre at Napier this morning regarding the matter, with the result that the above statement was subsequqently made.
MEN INCONVENIENCED CO-OPERATION OF EMPLOYERS SOUGHT. CONCESSION BY GOVERNMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. ’ The position of men called up for service with the fourth reinforcements whose entry into mobilisation camps has been deferred as a precautionary measure against further spread of the outbreak of measles was explained by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, in an interview last night. He said those men who were unable to resume their former employment were requested to call at the nearest Defence office with their original calling-up notice and on the date due would be entitled to receive military pay. This would continue so long as suitable employment was not available or till they were again posted for military duties. “At the moment it cannot be stated with any certainty what period will elapse before these men can be permitted to enter camps,” said Mr Jones. “It has been recognised that a number of men may have given up their civil employment in anticipation of their being required to proceed to mobilisation camps this week, and, therefore, they may now be out of work till required to undertake their military duties. In this connection, the co-operation and assistance of former employers of these men is sought by the Government, which requests that all employers who can possibly do so should retain or re-engage the memberswf their staffs who were called up for service with the fourth reinforcements.”
