NATIONAL WELFARE

WOMEN’S LEAGUE. MEETING IN MASTERTON YESTERDAY. The monthly meeting of the Women's National Welfare League was held in the Midland Hotel, Masterton, yesterday afternoon. Miss Kummer was in the chair. There were also present: Mesdames R. C. Drummond, W. McKenzie, E. J. Coleman, W. L. Hunter, G. Collie, F. Reynolds, A. Henderson, W. Andrew, T. F. Watson, F. C. Daniell, G. McCracken, S. Kilgour, Misses Wilson and Boddington. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames G. G. Tolhurst, H. P. Glen, R. Whyborn, S. L. P. Free and Miss Bellis. A motion of sympathy with Mrs G. G. Tolhurst in the illness of her daughter, Miss Shirley Mace, was passed and the wish was expressed that she would make a speedy recovery. A covering letter and a cheque for £5 was received from the T. G. McCarthy Trust. An appeal was read from the secretary of the Makogai Leper Fund and a collection taken up in the room resulted; in the sum of £1 4s being raised. This will be forwarded to the fund. Miss Kummer reported that two visits had been made to the Masterton Hospital during August and teas, fruit and cakes and reading matter had been distributed among the patients. Visits would be paid to Ward 6 every month. Mesdames Drummond, Watson and Collie were appointed visitors to the Masterton Hospital for September 17 and October 1. It was decided to visit the Buchanan Home some time during October, the date to be fixed at the next meeting. Mrs W. McKenzie advised that she had attended to five needy cases during August. A pair of shoes, size 4 and women’s and children's clothing were urgently required. Such gifts left at Mr Shoosmith’s shop would be much appreciated. Owing to illness in her home Mrs Charleson resigned from the position of treasurer. Her resignation was regretfully received, and Miss .Boddington was appointed to fill the vacancy.
