Mr L. B. Robinson, Nelson, and. Mr H. R. Sampson, Canterbury, have replaced Messrs J. Dicker and F. W. Sisson respectively, whose terms have expired, an th,e directorate of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation. A former district traffic manager of railways at Ohakune and later at Wanganui, Mr William Patrick Miller, died in a Wellington private hospital yesterday. He retired from the Railways Department nearly three years ago after completing 40 years’ service, and had been living in Wellington since last Easter. A pleasant gathering took place at the close of business last evening, when the manager and /staff of Messrs C. Smiths Ltd entertained Mr Don Leete at supper. In a happy speech the' manager, Mr J. F. Roberts, made a presentation of a fountain pen on behalf of the staff to Mr Leete, who leaves for camp in the next, draft. Mr Leete suitably replied. The death occurred suddenly at the Chateau Tongariro yesterday afternoon of Mr Arthur George Barnett, general manager of the Wellington Harbour Board, at the age of 57 years. He collapsed while playing a game of table tennis and died shortly after. On Thursday Mr Barnett and Miss Florence Penney, daughter of Mrs C. A. Penney, Wellington, were married in The Terrace Congregational Church, and they were on their honeymoon when Mr Barnett's death occurred. Mr Barnett began work as an office boj r with the Wellington Harbour Board in March, 1898. In 1911 Mr Barnett became assistant-secretary and treasurer. When the secretary, the late Mr H. E. Nicholls, retired on superannuation in 1924, Mr Barnett succeeded him in that position, and in 1932 he became chief executive officer and secretary, in 1934 he became general manager. Mr Barnett's first wife was Miss Doris Ingram- Gould, Feilding, whom he married in 1914.
