CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MATAR AW A-DALEFIELD MEETING (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Institute was held in the Dalefield Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs L. Rogers presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship, followed by the aspiration and prayers for peace. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Meyrick, S. Gallon and Ewington. A report on the recent children’s party and also the dance organised by the Drama Circle showed that both had been successful functions. It was decided to forward Christmas parcels to the soldiers who had left the district and gone overseas. During the afternoon Mrs Dagg, of Masterton, gave a demonstration on the making of articles from old felt hats, and had on view some very novel and useful articles made in this way. Mrs Dagg was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray. The competitions for the month resulted as follows:—Senior: Garment to fit refugee child from 4 to 6 years of age; Mrs Ross Gallon 1; Mrs Parker and Mrs McCarthy, equal, 2, Mrs Groube 3. Flowei' competition, three best bulbs:—Mrs W. Ticehurst 1, Mrs' H. Knowles 2, Mrs W. Knowles and Mrs Rogers, equal 3. Juniors: Garment to fit refugee child from 4 to 6 years of age, Misses I. Zillwood 1, J. Conwell 2, J. Goodin 3. Fower competition, three best bulbs: Misses A. Hodder 1, J. Goodin 2, P. Knowles. The garments in the competition together with other garments handed in at the meeting will make a suitable parcel to be forwarded to refugees. The competitions for next month were arranged as follows, seniors: Sponge roll with jam and best bloom. Juniors: Six pikelets and best bloom. Votes of thanks were accorded to Mesdames Gouth and Donovan, visitors from Masterton, who judged the competitions. Each was presented with a shoulder spray. A competition held during the after‘noon was won by Miss A. Hodder. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Rafe, McLaren and L. Parker. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. War Intercession Service. On Sunday evening at 7 o’clock in the Regent Theatre, a special War Intercession Service will be conducted by Ministers of various denominations. As Sunday has been proclaimed a National day of prayer by His Majesty the King, all citizens are asked to be present on the occasion. Championship Dance, At the King’s Theatre, Carterton, on Monday evening, the championship dance of the Carterton Football Club will take place. Tom Udy’s Dance band will provide the music. Trophies will be presented to both the senior and junior championship teams, as well as the Dewar Shield, by Rugby Union officials. A strong ladies’ committee has the catering arrangements in hand and this part of the dance should be a feature in itself. Redmond Cup. The Carterton team to meet Greytown in the final match for the Redmond Cup on Saturday will be chosen from the following: M. Hurley, A. Mahupuku, A. Reading, Geo Brown, E. E. Thompson, F. Fitzgerald, C. Jensen, N. McPhee, D. Smith, J. Fitzgerald, A. Blake, A. Matheson, H. Matheson, V. Inder, B. Warrington, J. Tilyard, T. Geange, D. Taylor. The Greytown seniors will field a fairly strong team against Carterton and will make a big bid to win the cup. Followers of the Rugby Code can be sure of witnessing a good game on Saturday. This will be the only game played in Wairarapa, and there should be a large attendance. Personal Items. Messrs S .Green, Jnr, and L. G. Watson have left on a tour of the South Island. Mr and Mrs L. G. Watson and family Whareroa, are spending their holidays with Mrs S. Green, Belvedere Street, Carterton. Hockey. Carterton senior men’s team to play Dalefield in final of Bannin Shield at Carterton on Saturday at 2 p.m.:—A. Ward, I. Mackie, S. Fisher, V. Sayer, M. Worsfold. D. Irwin, S. Ward, A. Fisher, D. Jackson, V. Inder and A. Sewell.
