A FIRELESS COOKER

HOW TO. MAKE ONE.

To make a useful fireless cooker, you will require a handle-less saucepan or a billy can, and a small wooden box, such as a butter-box. It is essential that the receptacle for food should have a tight-fitting lid so that the steam will not escape.

The copper will serve instead of a box. but the packing should be so firm that the heat will be retained. Make a nest for the saucepan of straw, newspapers, or rag, or better still, use an old pillow or cushion for packing nearest the saucepan. A small cushion that fits tightly on top of all this, thus enclosing the saucepan completely, is also recommended. Bring the food to the boil on the stove, remove the saucepan, and while the contents are still boiling place in the prepared nest. See that the saucepan fits snugly so that steam does not escape, then put on top the cushion or tightly folded newspapers. Food such as soups, porridge, stews, tripe, etc, is well cooked in a cooker such as this, and the foods can steam all day without worry to the housewife.
