ITALIAN BASE HEAVILY DAMAGED BUILDINGS HIT & PETROL DESTROYED. ALL BRITISH PLANES RETURN SAFELY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.20 p.m.) CAIRO, September 2. A R.A.F. communique states: “Bombers yesterday carried out a succession of raids against Assab harbour, buildings and warehouses, in a series of waves during the day. One large and one small jetty were directly hit and many bombs hit buildings and warehouses at one jettyhead. One petrol fire burned for two hours and another occurred after a heavy explosion and was seen burning fiercely from 25 miles by following flights of bombers. Military barracks were also directly hit. Enemy anti-aircraft fire was heavy but al! our planes returned.’’
