RIVER TRAGEDY
TWO MAORIS DROWNED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, September 2. Two Maoris, Hene Porangi Tuhaka, aged 29, and Ahipene Mikaera Rangi, aged 27, both married, were drowned in the Waiapu River at Tikitiki on Saturday night, and a companion, Ngahu Maxwell, was also caught in a backwash, but escaped in an exhausted condition. The three men were returning home on horseback, and the rising river made it necessary to swim their horses. Mr Rangi was heard to call for help, and then he disappeared. The others went downstream in an endeavour to rescue him, but they also were caught in the torrent. Mr Tuhaka was swept away and Mr Maxwell only just managed to reach the bank. At an inquest a verdict was returned that Mr Rangi was accidentally drowned while attempting to cross the river and Mr Tuhaka was drowned while attempting to rescue him.
