REDMOND CUP EASY WIN FOR CARTERTON. MASTERTCN. BEATEN BY 50 TO NIL The second game this season for the Redmond Cup was played on the Carterton Showgrounds on Saturday between Carterton and Masterton senior team and ended in a decisive victory for Carterton by 50-0. The game, was a much brighter one than that ol the previous Saturday, when Carterton and Gladstone/met. Although the score was large, the play throughout was of an interesting character and it was only the excellent defence of the Carterton players that stopped Masterton from scoring on several occasions. The Carterton backs had a field day and it was good passing, judgment and speed that carried them to success. 42 points being scored by them and eight by the forwards. Thompson. Reading. Mahupuku and Fitzgerald were responsible for most of the tries by the backs and D. Smith and H. Mathieson, scored a try each in the forwards. Jensen; Mahupuku and Fitzgerald converted many of the tries. Mr W. Grantham was an efficient referee.
THIRD GRADE MATCH. RED STAR v. PETONE. The Red Star third grade team visited Petone on Saturday and played the Petone third grade team the latter winning by 9 points to 8. Rennie and Corlett scored tries for Red Star, <. ne of which was converted by C. Rei-i. The Petone team scored a try and kicked two penalty goals. The visiting team was subsequently entertained at dinner by the Petone players. The Petone team will return the visit on Saturday. IN OTHER CENTRES Wellington.—ln a hard battle notable for patchy, though at times exciting play, strenuous forward attacks, and dour defence, Taranaki defeated Wellington by 11 points to 9 at Athletic Park, Wellington, on Saturday afternoon. Taranaki deserved to win, being undoubtedly the better team. Taranaki registered two tries (one converted) and a penalty goal and Wellington a try (converted) and a potted goal. Timaru. —North Otago defeated South Canterbury today by 10 points to five.
Christchurch. —Senior reserve grade: Old Boys 14. Merivale 11; Army 19, Territorials 17; New Brighton 27, Southern 8; Sunnyside 12. Athletic 8. Taumarunui. —King Country beat Wanganui 14-0. Auckland.—Suburbs 8, Marist 3; Training College 10, Grafton 6: Technical 17, North Shore 15; Otahuhu 12, University 8; Takapuna 23, Ponsonby 9. Auckland 19, Bay of Plenty 8. Greymouth.—Brilliant football with fast forward play predominating was witnessed on Saturday when West Coast defeated Canterbury 13-11 after leading 13-5 at half-time. Dunedin. —Southern 18, University A 14; Pirates 11- Zingari-Richmond 7; Dunedin 14, Taieri 12; Alhambra 17, Kaikorai 3; Union 9, University B 3.
Nelson. —Nelson 8, Golden BayMotueka 3.
Manawatu. —Hawke's Bay had little difficulty in beating Manawatu on Saturday, the score being 18 points to 8.
