MOTOR DRIVERS
NEW TEST REQUIREMENT. PROVISION THAT MAY BE MODIFIED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. There is now a possibility that the regulation requiring a new driving test for motorists who had not renewed their licences within throe months from May 31 may be relaxed. Under a clause in the Motor Drivers’ Regulations of 1940, new road tests are required, as from September 1, of all drivers who have not renewed their licences, and this has caused considerable concern among many drivers, particularly those who held licences up to May 31 last and did not bother to renew as they had decided not to register their cars for the time being, owing to the petrol restrictions. Mr J. S. Hawkes, secretary of the Automobile Association communicated this morning with the Commissioner of Transport, to see if a relaxation of the regulations could be obtained, particularly in respect of motorists who held licences up to May 31 last, but did not; renew owing to the petrol restrictions. Mr Laurenson's reply was that he would go into the matter and that no doubt something would be done.
