MODERN WAR
MEANING BROUGHT HOME TO BERLINERS
ILLUSION OF SECURITY DISSIPATED.
BATTERIES AND SEARCHLIGHTS DEFEATED.
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright! LONDON. August 30.
The Berlin correspondent of the “New York Times.” commenting on the R.A.F. raids on Berlin, says
that the raids have brought home to Berliners a realisation of what modern warfare means. iThey have shattered the myth circulated among the people that Berlin is so well defended by anti-aircraft fire and searchlights that enemy aircraft cannot approach the capital.
Wednesday night's raids proved that anti-aircraft batteries and searchlights alone are not capable of keeping British bombers away. They cruised over Berlin for about three hours without the Germans being able to drive them off.
