SOLDIERS’ WIVES
INCREASE IN ALLOWANCES SUGGESTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. An inquiry whether the Government intended to increase the pay and allowances of men of the fighting forces to- compensate their wives and families for the increased cost of living, was contained in an urgent question asked of the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. by Mr Broadfoot in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Broadfoot asked whether, in view of the Arbitration Court's recent decision to raise the wages of workers operating under awards by 5 per cent, a corres'ponding increase would be provided in service pay.
"Soldiers called up for the Expeditionary Force, either in this country or abroad, are not materially affected by the cost of living," Mr Fraser replied. Opposition members: "What about their families?”
Mr Fraser: “The question of their dependants is being examined.”
