WARPLANES FUND
GOVERNMENT’S DECISION ORIGINAL ALLOCATION TO STAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ August 29. A reply indicating the use to which any surplus money collected for gift fighter aeroplanes for Britain will be put has been received by the mayor of Palmerston North, Mr Mansford, from the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. The Minister’s information is given in response to a request by the mayor that the whole of the amount raised by the public for the gift fund be sent to Britain for that specific purpose, and that an intimation be given to this effect before the public started contributing. The Government's previous decision was that the availability of sterling funds for the purchase of the aeroplanes be limited to £lOO,OOO. Mr Nash's reply is as follows:—“The allocation of £lOO.OOO is the maximum amount available for a direct charge on the sterling funds. Any surplus will still be used to defend Britain by defraying our costs of the Empire air scheme or for the purchase of aeroplanes to defend New Zealand.’
