OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
THE PARK LAKE
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —What a grand job our Borough councillors have. Last week they have been handed out an extra bonus in the form of growls, jolts and criticism, none of which have been in any way helpful. I should like to have a growl which may be of some use. There was a time when the Park Lake was a fine sheet of clear water. It was cleaned out at regular intervals, and it was a pleasure to row on or swim in. It was a great asset to our town. Look at it last summer—nothing but a slimy pool of decayed vegetation and weeds, an example of sheer neglect. Last winter I counted twelve men working in the Park and for many months the wages alone must have cost well over £5O per week. Yet, through no fault of the workmen, the lake got from bad to worse. When the frogs came up to the surface to breathe fresh air, they had the greatest job of getting down again. Who is to blame? The Mayor and the councillors or the Park Custodian? Some will say the Mayor and councillors, of course. So I put out this suggestion: That they (the Mayor and councillors) don gum boots and clean out the lake themselves. No one else seems to care. I offer to help if the council will provide me with the gear I reckon I want. Here is the gear—An armchair, cigarettes, and a bottle of beer, or make it two please, and the Mayor and councillors clearing out the lake and me on the bank giving suggestions. The lake should be in nr time what it really is intended to be—a thing of beauty and a joy for ever I trust this suggestion will be given due consideration. —I am, etc, JEREMIAH. Masterton. August 27.
