NEARING U.S.A. COAST MET BY DESTROYERS END OF HAZARDOUS TRIP. PRECAUTIONS OBSERVED. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 27. The American Legion is now 500 miles off New York. She was picked up by two American destroyers. The 870 refugees cheered the destroyers' arrival, after a hazardous trip, in which they were first escorted by Finnish patrol ships, through a Russian minefield, then by British ships and planes, through the minefields of a Scotland area. The passengers wore lifebelts constantly and held repeated boat drills.
