Mr S. Rice, Wyndham, has been reelected chairman of the Southland Education Board for another period of two years. His election was unopposed. Mr Rice has been a member of the board for the last 16 years. The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service, returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday and left again last night for the South Island. He expects to be absent from Wellington for about two weeks.
At the Hotel Midland yesterday were the following: Messrs Grundy (Hastings), Letham (Napier), H. N. Scrimshaw, F. Reid. D. Dyer. McCorkindale, Rusbridgc. H. Smith, Saxton (Wellington). The death has occurred in Christchurch after a long illness of Mr Guy Fosbery Ronalds, a veteran of the South African War. He left New Zealand with the 6th Contingent and subsequently served as galloper to the late General Plumer.
The death has occurred of Mr John Hayes Enright, Westport, well-known business man and company director, states a Press Association message from Christchurch. He was vice-consul for Norway at Westport for nearly 30 years and holder of the Norwegian Order of St. Olaf.
One of the early pioneers of Wai-nui-o-mata, Mr James Jackson; Wood, died recently at his home, Lower Hutt, in his 83rd year. Born at Wainui-o-mata in 1875, he was a son of the late John and Maria Wood, who arrived in Wellington by the Sea Snake in 1855. As one of the district's pioneer farmers and a Justice of the Peace for many years. Mr Wood took a keen interest in public matters and gave valuable years in their service. He was chairman of the Wainui-o-mata school and hall committees foi - more than 20 years and was a trustee of the Methodist Church for a similar period. Mr Wood is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Mary Prouse, daughter of the late Richard Prouse. Wainui-o-mata. They were married 55 years ago. There are four sons, Messrs J. L.. E. R.. and J. O. Wood, Wainui-o-mata. and A. J. Wood, Bunnythorpe, and six daughters, Mrs F. R. Jenkins. Lower Hutt; Mrs E. L. Whitcher, Petone; Mrs L. H. Jenkins. Wainui-o-mata; Mrs R. Collings and Miss M. Wood, Christchurch, and Mrs E. H. Fisher. Carterton.
