WAIRARAPA GAMES NORTH v SOUTH. I WIN FOR NORTHERN TEAM. There was good weather on Saturday for hockey and some interesting games were witnessed. RESULTS AT A GLANCE SENIOR MEN. North Wairarapa 2, South Wairarapa 1. JUNIOR MEN. (Burgess-Cole Knockout.) Carterton 3, Wesley 2. Old Boys 8, Dalefield 2. SENIOR LADIES. Wairarapa Maoris 2, Wairarapa B 2. THOMPSON=PAYNE CUP NORTH v SOUTH. A FAST GAME. The annual fixture for the Thompson Payne Shield between North and South Wairarapa was played on Saturday at Lansdowne and was won by North by 2 goals to I after a very fast and exciting game. The ground was in good order and there was a good attendance of spectators.

The game commenced at rather a slow pace, North being the, first to attack. Then South livened the game up and had North in trouble and they had to concede a penalty corner for obstruction but no advantage was gained. From the 25yd bully North went straight through to the South circle where Stevenson sent a fine centring hit to Worthington, whose shot at goal went over the net. North continued to attack for a time, then South broke away. A misunderstanding among the North backs gave South a chance but Worsfold’s shot missed. Continuing the attack Jackson was very unlucky with a hot shot which hit the cross bar. Fast, even play with both sides attacking in turn saw shots missed by J. Dick for North and Worsfold for South. Then Worsfold made a good solo run with only the goalie to beat but the latter made a splendid save and play was taken to the South circle. A good pass by Worthington enabled Brian Dick to score for the North. From the half way bully South went straight through and Worsfold evened the score.

North attacked again and South conceded a penalty corner but the the ball was not stopped and the spell ended in mid-field with the score unaltered. North attacked at the start of the second spell, and Foster had a shot which was well stopped by the South goalie. A good chance was missed here through slow following up. Both teams had turns at attacking and each goalie was well tried out and made good saves. South again had North in trouble. Worsfold shot the ball into the net but was penalised for carrying. North then made a break away and Brian Dick again scored. For the remainder of the spell both defences were severely tested, North having a slight advantage during the closing stages. North very nearly scored within a few minutes of the call of time but a misunderstanding by Brian Dick and Foster saw the latter’s shot miss.

S. Fisher for South and M. Sigvertson for North, as full backs, and the two goalies gave very fine exhibitions. Play all through was of a high standard.

Messrs Hayne and Clements' were umpires.
