Mr R. H. Williams, secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Association, has returned from a visit to Timaru. Mr W. J. Campbell, the retiring chairman, has' been re-elected chairman of the Auckland Education Board.

Messrs C. Cedarman. C. Lee (Napier), R. H. Conway, J. Sayton (Wellington) were at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, yesterday.

The friends of Mr H. J. Cooper, ol Opaki. will be pleased to learn that he is making satisfactory progress after having undergone an operation at the Glenwood Hospital, Masterton.

The funeral of the late Mr S. C. Hansen, of Masterton, took place yesterday, tiie Rev. J. Davie officiating at the chapel and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Fahey, D. Morton. S. Cook, C. Curtis, W. Pike and J. Large.

A former General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Military Forces. Major-General R. Young. C. 8., C.M.G., D. 5.0., has been appointed Dominion Commander of the Home Guard established under the Emergency Reserve Corps Regulations. This was announced yesterday by the Minister of National Service, Mr Semple. One of the older generation of Hawke’s Bay farmers, Mr John Calder Main, has died in Waipukurau at the age of 84. Mr Main was born in Scotland, and left home to come to New Zealand in his early twenties. He worked in Christchurch for a number of years, then spent some time in Ashburton. When the Riverslea station in Hawke's Bay was cut up for selection he bought part of it and farmed it successfully for some years. In 1905 he disposed of his Riverslea property and bought part of Mt Herbert, where he had lived since. The death occurred at Seatoun on Thursday, of a prominent citizen of Wellington. Mr John Edmund Ramsey. For many years he was a director of W. D. and H. O. Wills. Ltd., and in recent years a director of J. R. McKenzie. Ltd.. Bryant and May. Ltd., Frozen Products. Ltd., and Fountain Court. Ltd. Born at Auckland 59 years ago, Mr Ramsey was educated at .Auckland Grammar School, and for the last 40 years he was a member of the firm of W. D. and H. O. Wills. Ltd., and its predecessors, for 20 years of which he was a director till his retirement in 1938. Mr Ramsey went to Wellington about 30 years ago. He was a member of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society.
