PRIMARY SCHOOLS

RUGBY TOURNAMENT. WAIRARAPA BEAT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. That the southern portion of the North Island has plenty of promising Rugby football talent coming along was evident from the bright form shown in the second, day's play of the primary schools’ quadrangular tournament, in which schools from the Wellington. Hutt Valley, Wairarapa and Wanganui districts are engaged. The weather was beautifully fine, and the dry ground and ball caused play to be exceptionally fast. A band of spectators, who half-filled the main stand, thoroughly enjoyed the bright form shown. Wairarapa beat Wellington 8-6, and Wanganui beat Hutt Valley 16-6. Wairarapa v Wellington. Wairarapa and Wellington took the field at 2 p.m., the teams being:— Wairarapa: Hemi; Collie, Bannister, Hodgetts; Fly, Josephs; Butler; Capes, Ward, Richardson, Marryatt, Wall, McPhee, Olliver, Wilmshurst.

Wellington: Ayres; Poole, Churchward, R. Carr; Gardiner. Page; Perry: Dimock, Williams. McLaughlin, McCrea, Lindsay, J. Carr, McLean, O'Sullivan.

Wellington opened brightly, the backs showing pace. In attempting to clear his goal, a Wairarapa back made a weak kick, from which Churchward secured to open the scoring for Wellington with a try. Ayres failed to add the extra points. A little later a pretty bit of passing by the Wellington backs ended in Carr racing over for a try. which Ayres failed to improve. The Wellington score would have been larger but for faulty play by the fiveeighths, Carr being inclined to selfishness, and Gardiner over-doing the cutin.

The Wairarapa forwards, with Ward Capes and Richardson in the van seemed to get their second wind in the second spell, and took play to the Wellington line. Here Josephs, a nimble Maori boy, cleverly cross-kicked, and enabled Collie to score the simplest of tries between the posts, for Fly to convert. Wairarapa kept up the pressure and Fly put them ahead with a penalty goal. Play was very fast, and there wagreat excitement as the ball travelled up and down the field at brisk pace. A fast and attractive game ended in a well-deserved win for Wairarapa by 8 points to 6. Mr D. A. Law was the referee.
