SHANGHAI CONTROL

VIEWS OF JAPANESE ARMY PAPER BELLIGERENT TONE TAKEN TO AMERICA. BLOCKADE SUGGESTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 14. It is reported from Shanghai that the Japanese army publication “Shinshun Pao,” in an editorial, warned the foreign defence commanders that the Japanese army would categorically take over the British sectors regardless of. the proposal of the United States Consul-General, Mr Peck, that the United States marines take over all British defence sectors south of Soochow Creek, leaving the Japanese one British sector north of the creek between the Honan and Yuyaching Roads and north to the boundary road and north station. The paper said: “If the American scheme is enforced we hope the Japanese army will blockade Shanghai similarly to Tientsin —then we will see what the United States marines can do about that.”

A Washington report says the As-sistant-Secretary of State, Mr Sumner Welles, said the United States considers the situation in Shanghai resulting from the withdrawal of the British garrison as a local matter to be adjusted there.
