SOCIAL EVENING

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD. ANNUAL GATHERING HELD LAST NIGHT. The Masterton Townswomen’s Guild held its annual social last evening in the Savage Club Rooms. There was a large attendance and the president Mrs Bennett, welcomed those present.

Proceedings were opened with the singing of "God Defend New Zealand. The Musical Circle, under the baton of Miss D. O'Donnell, rendered two part songs, "Water Lilies” and ‘'Land of Hope and Glory,” which were much enjoyed. During the evening four interesting and amusing competitions were held, the winners being: Tearing an elephant from a newspaper, Mr Downes; lucky number. Mrs Turner; Townswomen's Guild word building, Miss D. O'Donnell, and popular tunes, Mrs Burke.

Two folk dancing items. “If All the World Were Paper" and "Mage on the Cree,” were given by Miss O'Donnell. Mesdames Campbell. Dixon, Jones, Scrivener. Millar Hope, Whittaker and Taylor. The vocal items, which were much appreciated by all, were: Duet, "May Day Morn’ ’and "My Love is Like' a Red, Red Rose," Mrs Burke and Miss D. O'Donnell, accompanied by Mrs Bennett at the piano; solos. "The Piper From Over the Way" and "The Road to the Isles," by Miss O'Donnell. An entertaining play, "Any More for the Skylark," was produced by Mrs Hair, those taking part being:— Mesdames Brown, Downes, Pickering. Diggle, Shouler, Jarvis, Hill, Parsons, Misses Barbara Hair, Norma Brown, Marion Bennett. Mary Shouler and Peter Downes. Behind the scenes the singers were Misses O'Donnell, J. Wiltshire. Mrs Taylor, and violinist Mr Taylor. The guild wishes to express its thanks to Wairarapa College and the Savage Club for their kind assistance in helping to make the evening a success. Supper was served and the concert part of the programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Members and friends then enjoyed several dances. The dance music was supplied by Mrs Coleman, piano, and Mr S. F. Taylor, violin, and extras were played by Miss Johnson.
