WAIRARAPA HEAT MANAWATU
A GRADE REPRESENTATIVE FIXTURE.
PLAY OF A HIGH STANDARD. Play of a high standard was witnessed by many spectators at the Masterton Club’s court on Saturday night when Wairarapa beat Manawatu by 15 matches to 9 in a return A grade Badminton representative fixture. The visitors were hospitably entertained by the Wairarapa hosts and spent an enjoyable time.

Hawksworth, the Dominion’s foremost player, showed that he is still capable of turning on a brilliant exhibition. His imposing array of titles makes him a formidable opponent. In all his matches he impressed spectators with his flawless strokes.
Miss B. Payton. top ranker in the Wairarapa, won all her . matches with case and played consistently well. Her footwork and clever angled shots made hard going for her opponents. J. J. Payton. also one of the leading players in New Zealand, was in fine form. His singles match with C. Sheerin produced sparkling play and provided great entertainment. Sheerin, on leave with the forces, was fighting fit. but Payton was able the distance. Sheerin won the first set convincingly, but the hot pace told in the latter stages of the game. Both players were frequently applauded for brilliant shots.
Miss N. Rishworth played a good steady game in her doubles games but was out of touch in her singles. She combined well with Miss Payton in her ladies' doubles.
Miss N. Richards played an impressive game and made excellent, use of her powerful smash. In her singles game she showed particularly good form and in her doubles combined well with Miss Yates and C. J. Carle. The Wairarapa team was fortunate in having her services. P. Rishworth and B. M. Hurley played very consistently and went well in all their matches. Hurley had a convincing win in his singles, while Rishworth fully extended his opponent. Miss B. Boyd, a first year player, made her debut and showed great promise. Her combined doubles play with W. L. Harrington was particularly good. Given coaching Miss Boyd would hold her own in any match.
W. L. Harrington and C. J. Carle struck form and turned on good performances. The latter played consistently to win all his matches. Harrington made good use of his short drop shots and placed his shots very well. Miss N. Yates and Mrs Feltham also went well, the former playing an excellent singles match.
RED STAR BEAT PAHIATUA HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. SATURDAY NIGHT'S MATCH Red Star beat Pahiatua in an interclub match played at Masterton on Saturday night, when a high standard of play was witnessed. Pahiatua sent down a strong combination, but Red Star were too hard to beat. In the Red Star team G. B. Peterson and F. Roff played particularly well and turned on good exhibitions against T. Tuohy and D. O'Brien. The Red Star ladies were also in good form.
The visitors were entertained by the Red Star Club and on behalf of the Pahiatua Club Mr Tuohy thanked the hosts for the warm welcome. Mr G. Peterson returned thanks. Detailed results are as follow (Red Star players being mentioned first in every instance): —
