He had birdies at the sixth (400 yards), seventh (420 yards), and fifteenth (505 yards). He was not at his best, however, as he had one 6 and six s’s on his card. This was not good shooting, considering that the weather conditions were perfect, the fairways and greens in ap-ple-pie order, and that placing was permitted on the fairways. Roberts took 78 for the round. 38 out and 40 home.
Horne, who partnered Roberts, took 41 for the out journey, and 40 for the run home. Henderson, a handicap 3 player, who was Hornabrook’s partner, went out in 42 and came back in 39. Hornabrook beat Roberts by 2 and 1 in the battle between the No. I’s in the singles. Roberts drew ahead with 5 to 6 at the second hole, when Hornabrook’s long brassie second found a bunker, and he failed to get out at the first attempt. Hornabrook squared the game with a birdie 4 at. the seventh (420 yards), and turned for home 1 up. when he rang on a birdie 3 at the ninth (377 yards). Hornabrook took 38 for the out journey to Roberts’s 40.
Roberts squared the match at the short eleventh, when Hornabrook popped his tee shot into a bunker; and exploded out into another bunker. They halved the next four holes, and the champion clinched the argument by sinking a 20-foot putt to win the short sixteenth, after having been bunkered from the tee, and then rang on a birdie 4 at the seventeenth (400 yards), which gave him the game by 2 and 1. Hornabrook did the home journey in 38, which gave him 76 for lhe round, while Roberts took 40 each way.
Henderson was 3 up on Horne at the fifth, in the match between the No. 2's, but the Hutt man took the seventh, eighth, and ninth with 4's, to square the game at the turn. Both took 41 for the run out. Horne took the twelfth and thirteenth with 4's to be 2 up, but Henderson got one back wilh a 4 at tiie fourteenth. Horne retaliated with a birdie 4 at the fifteenth (505 yards) to stand 2 up again, and he took the game .by 3 and 2 by winning the short sixteenth with a bogey 3.
