MATAHIWI
SOLDIER ENTERTAINED PRESENTATION TO CAPT. HOLMES. (“Times-Age” Special.) In the Matahiwi School last night the settlers of the district entertained Captain Holmes at a social. There was a large attendance. Mr F. Clarke in presenting Captain Holmes with a pipe and cigarette case, referred to the excellent service rendered by their guest during his residence in the district. For 20 years he had been in the army and was a particularly capable officer. Captain Holmes suitably replied, and urged that those who were unable to serve in the military forces should devote themselves to increasing produc- 1 tion.
The prizes in the card tournament were won by Mrs Amundsen and Mr Findley. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Clarice and Mr N. Carswell. Mr S. Amundsen was M.C. The special prizes for a waltz were donated by Mr Angus Scott and won by Mrs Clarice and Miss L. Wilson.
Supper was provided and an enjoyable gathering was brought to a conclusion with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
