EKETAHUNA

SOLDIERS’ SOCIALS GATHERING AT KAIPARORO. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very large crowd attended a social tendered to the district’s members of the Third Echelon. Privates B. Minnett and Joe Torrey, in the Kaiparoro Hall. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mr J. Barnes’s orchestra, and extras by Private Torrey. During the evening vocal items were rendered by Messrs D. Falkner. Max Smith and Frank Sigvertsen and were greatly appreciated. The M.’sC. were Messrs G. A. Hansen and B. Dick.

Captain Parry, on behalf of the residents. presented each of the guests with a wristlet watch wishing them the best of luck. Messrs G. A. Hansen and G. R. Sykes also addressed ths soldiers, who were accorded musical honours, after which they briefly returned thanks. Eleven other soldiers present, also Sister Jones, were presented with cigarettes, and accorded musical honours. Supper was provided' by the local ladies. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem. HAMUA FUNCTION.

Hamua residents gathered in large numbers at the Hamua Hall when Private Grant Smith, a local member of the Third Echelon home on leave, was the guest of honour. The gathering took the form of a dance, which was greatly enjoyed l and for which music was supplied by Ken Hicks’s orchestra. At a suitable interval, Mr J. B. Carruthers, in a neat speech, asked Private Smith to accept a wristlet watch on behalf of the residents of Hamua. Mr R. Mabey. on behalf of the R.S.A.. spoke in a similar strain. A presentation was also made by Mr Carruthers to Private Smith on behalf of the Hamua Women’s Institute.

The guest of honour thanked the residents for their kindness and expressions of goodwill. Community singing was indulged in. The M.C. was Mr R. Mabey, while a committee of ladies provided supper.
