WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women’s Institute was held in the Matarawa School, when there was a good attendance of members. as well as several visitors. The meeting was opened with the Ode to Friendship and a prayer for peace.

A letter of thanks from the Patriotic Society was received in connection with articles forwarded for the Army and Air Force, which included 118 hot water bottle covers, scarves and 2 pairs bedsocks.

The Navy League forwarded a letter of thanks for a knitted scarf donated by Mrs Meyrick, Senr. A very enjoyable social was held on

the principal of “Sing, play or pay.” The programme was opened by Mrs Hughes and Miss Knowles and was followed by a song by Mrs Callister. Three members, Mesdames Hodder, O’Keefe and McCarty, staged a short playette, Mrs A. Hodder gave a humorous recitation, while songs were sung by Mesdames Rofe and W. Knowles. Mrs Rogers contributed a story and a piano solo, a song was rendered by Mrs Groube, Mrs W. Thomas gave a pianoforte solo, and Mesdam.es Neilsen and W. Ticehurst provided short stories. The remainder of those present cheerfully paid their fines.

Afternoon tea was followed by a short community sing.

A bring and buy stall netted a fair sum for the Institute work fund.

The monthly competition was for a garment to fit children from 2 to 4 years to be handed in for British refugees. There were fifty-three garments in this competition, the winners being: Seniors, Mrs Mi. J. Parker and Mrs S. McCarty (equal) 1, Mrs W. Neilson 2, Mrs F. O’Keefe 3. Juniors: Miss B. Sadler 1, Miss I. Zillwood 2, Miss Avis McKenzie 3. Other competitions resulted as follows: Posy, Mrs McCarty 1. Mrs K. Hodder 2, Mrs L. Rogers 3. Buttonhole, Miss Joyce Goodin, Miss Iris Zillwood 2, Miss Beth Sadler 3. The singing of the National Anthem closed a very enjoyable gathering. Personal.
