WASHINGTON, August 9.
The Assistant-Secretary of State (Mr Sumner Welles) indicated that United States Marines will remain at Shanghai, at least at present, and said the British withdrawal had no effect whatever on United States policies regarding the position in the Far East and said numerous details must be worked out by the local authorities at Shanghai, including whether United States Marines lake over the defence sector evacuated by the British. He said he doubted the accuracy of Shanghai reports that 600 marines were on route to Shanghai from Honolulu.
