HOMES FOR FARM WORKERS
SINGLE MEN'S UNITS BEING BUILT IN MASTERTON. ASSEMBLY MATTER OF HOURS Farmers in the district are taking full advantage of the Government’s scheme to provide transportable homes for farm workers in the campaign for increased production. Several single men’s cottages have been built, and they may be either hired at a charge of 2s per week or bought outright. Where extra farm labour is required urgently, but accommodation is strictly limited such a provision is proving to be a practical step in overcoming the difficulty. The cottages are sturdily built single units, which are bolted together to enable rapid, easy transportation to the required site with a minimum of work.
Six of the cottages have been built, and each is in six distinct sections. The roof, floor and walls are bolted in sections and an instance of the speed with which they may be re-assembled is shown in the fact that a cottage was taken to a place near Eketahuna at 11 a.m. recently, and the whole work was completed by 5 p.m. The units are match-lined and have detachable chimneys, and they provide light, airy, accommodation.
The approval of the State Advances Corporation is required before the huts can be taken.
