APPEAL TO HOUSEHOLDERS
ERECTION OF LETTER BOXES AT GATES.
PUBLIC’S CO-OPERATION SOUGHT.
An appeal to Masterton householders to assist the postal authorities by erecting letter boxes at their gates is at present being made in Masterton. A circular on the subject is being despatched to 800 householders in town by the Postmaster, Mr M. M. Simpson. It reads:—
“You will recall that some time ago the Department asked householders to erect gate-boxes for the reception of their correspondence. It is pleasing to record that a considerable number of householders have acceded to the request, but in other cases it appears to have been overlooked, or boxes have been erected back from the road-line. “In my previous communication on this subject the need for conserving ‘ V the postman’s time was stressed. As ’> you will appreciate, the outbreak of war has accentuated to a marked extent the need for conserving departmental man-power. Many postal officers have already joined the military forces, and the Department must keep their positions open for them on return.
“In view of the foregoing and bearing in mind the benefit to householders generally by the expediting of postmen’s deliveries, the Post Office appeals to residents who arc still without letter boxes at their gates to provide them at an early date. On account of the difficulties now confronting the department, it is hoped that you will readily co-operate in this matter.”
