FEATHERSTON
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING HELD LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor. Mr J. W. Card, was in the chair. There were also present Councillors M. B. Tait. B. G. Hardie, B. B. Donald. W. Johnson. C. C. Kenward. H. W. Cundy and F S. Viles. An apology for absence was received from Councillor R. F. Watson. The balance sheet for the last financial year was returned from the Government Department, and the Town Clerk. Mr H. Rolls was complimented on his work.
Accounts for £lBl were passed. The financial position was shown as follows: District fund account. credit £973; cemetery account, credit £33; Domain account, credit £l6: Mayor’s relief account, credit £80: water supply impovement loan (1936). credit £2.527: library account, credit £37.
The Health Inspector reported a clean bill of health for the past month. Mr B. McKenna was appointed to the position of ranger. The oiler of £3 10s from Mr W. G. Pope for trees cut in the Domain was accepted.
The Mayor’s action in confirming the appointment of Messrs E. P. Norman (Town Clerk, Wellington), C. T. Bishop (Eastbourne). H. L. Jenkins (Levin). H. J. Bishop and A. E. Hurley suggested in a letter from the Municipal Association as representatives of the association in connection with the Local Bodies' Officers' award proceedings, was approved.
LITERARY INSTITUTE
NEW BOOKS SECURED. A number of new books have been bought for the children’s and adult sections of the Literary Institute and when catalogued will be put into circulation. The country service is sending 50 of the latest books, which would be too expensive for the local library to buy. The Borough Council has donated 2 copies of the centennial edition of “The City of the Strait.” Soldiers Entertained. The Hockey Club held a very enjoyable dance in the Anzac Hall when several soldiers were entertained. Mr V. Boyd supplied the music and Mr Chas. Buck was the M.C. During the evening Mr Staples, on behalf of the Hockey Club, in making a presentation of a fountain pen to each soldier, said that, their guests had been regular attendants at the weekly hockey dances since the foundation of the club, and members felt they would like them each to receive a small momento of the happy times spent together. Private Arthur Reed suitably replied on behalf of the soldiers. The guests in uniform were Privates A. Reed, W. Sadler, M. Hyland, J.j Lloyd. I. Rae and W. Johnston. ) The Monte Carlo dances were won by Misses Molly Tocker and Maj' Chaslin and Mr I. Feast and Miss E. Reed. Football and Basketball. Football and basketball teams from the Featherston primary school visited Kahutara yesterday afternoon and played matches against local school teams. Kahutara won the basketball by 12-5 and Featherston were successful in the football by 9-3. A seven-a-side midget football match resulted in a draw.
