HUGE TONNAGE

ALLIED AND NEUTRAL SHIPPING. AVAILABLE TO BRITAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 8. The Ministry of Shipping revealed that more than 9,000.000 tons of Allied shipping other than British, comprising vessels of 500 tons gross and over, is under the control of the British Empire and the Allies. The total includes 5.500,000 tons of Norwegian shipping and about 3,000,000 tons of Dutch. The Belgian and Polish Governments control 500.000 tons. In addition Britain has seized nearly 500,000 tons of Danish shipping and requisitioned 500,000 tons of French. Another 1,250,000 tons of neutral shipping is on time charter to Britain. This tonnage is distributed throughout the world, and is free to engage in trade, except contraband with the enemy.
