OBITUARY MR S. H. BAGGARLEY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred at Hamilton on Saturday of a former well-known resident of Carterton in the person of Mr Samuel Harold Baggarley, at the age of 66 years. He was the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs James Baggarley. of Carterton. where he was born. He had resided in Carterton until about 25 years ago, when he shifted to Pahiatua to take up farming in that district and subsequently removed to Hamilton. He received his education in Carterton where he followed the occupation of a wheelwright. During his residence in Carterton he made many friends, with whom he was very popular. The late Mr Baggarley leaves a widow and family of three sons and three daughters. A daughter predeceased him about 12 months ago. One son is in Egypt with the First Echelon. Three sisters reside in Masterton —Mesdames G. H. Eaton (Colombo Road). J. Payne (Lincoln Road), and L. Downs (Lansdowne), and another sister, Mrs Muldrock is a resident of Waverley. Mr G. Baggarley, of Auckland, is 'a brother. ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows (Manchester Unity) was held last night and was presided over by P.G. Sister M. E. Eagle. Feeling reference was made to the death of the Grand Secretary of the New Zealand Branch, Bro. A. G. Shrimpton and as a mark of respect members stood in silence for a few moments. Two members declared on the sick funds of the lodge. Loyal Masterton Lodge wrote enclosing tickets for a social, the pro-J*-ceeds of which are to be devoted to the - National Patriotic Fund. The social will be held in the Municipal Hall on Saturday, September 7. Sick pay amounting to £lO was passed for payment and a funeral benefit was ordered to be paid. A maternity claim was certified to as correct and will be forwarded on to headquarters. The question of disposing of the lodge piano was left to the trustees, with power to act. It was resolved that a further degree be advanced to members at the next lodge meeting by the lecture master. P.G. Bro. C. E. White. SCHOOL AFFAIRS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School was held last night, and was presided over by Mr H. J. McKenzie. There were also present: Messrs Jas. Finn, P. L. Beere, R. Williams, G. Stark, W. E. Knowles, G. Rabbitts, E. B. Clarke, C. K. Goodin and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. The chairman reported that the contractor for the erection of school bicycle stalls had completed his work. The chairman said that the building was not satisfactory and that the contractor had notified the Education Board that the specifications were not correct, but had been advised to continue according to plans. The chairman reported that the metalling of the path to the school had been completed and was a great improvement. The headmaster's report was read and showed that the attendances had suffered owing to prevailing colds and influenza. Arbor Day would be celebrated on Wednesday next, when trees would be planted. Standards 1 and 2 had been removed from the South School owing to two teachers, Messrs Harp and Lane having been transferred. The children were now located at Holloway Street School. The school football team had played games against Martinborough. Greytown and Featherston. The former game was lost and the latter two were wen. The Home and School Association had donated £5 of the library subsidy for the primary department. An entertainment would be held tonight in the school when it was hoped that members of the committee and a large attendance of the public would be present. The headmaster’s report was approved. The Borough Council advised that it x was prepared to accept the Educa- ! tion Board's offer to subsidise £1 for £1 up to £2OO for the proposed new swimming baths. The treasurer reported the general account to be in credit to the extent of £47 6s 5d and the special account in credit £22 10s 4d. Accounts amounting to £39 were passed for payment. Personal Items. Mr C. Teal, of Carterton. who has been an inmate of the Masterton Hospital where he underwent an operation. has returned to his home. Mr A. Adams, of Wyndham Street. Carterton, left at the weekend for the Waiouru Military Camp, where he will take up work. Mr Bert Standen, of Levin, was a visitor to Carterton during the weekend. He visited his father, who underwent a serious operation at the Masterton Hospital recently. Mr E. J. Matson, of Carterton. has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Hospital for an operation. Mr Geo. James, borough overseer, who recently underwent an operation in the Greytown Hospital for appendicitis. has again entered the institution for further treatment. Soldiers’ Social. The settlers of Parkvale and dis-j trict will tender a social to soldiers ofi the Third Echelon now on leave in the district, in the Parkvale Hall on Thurs-I
day next, commencing at 8 p.m. Good music will be provided for the dance and a card tournament will be held in the supper-room. Interspersed with the dancing will be a number of vocal items and at an appropriate interval in the proceedings presentations will be made to members of the echelon from Parkvale and the surrounding districts. Supper will be provided. The prices of admission have been fixed at ladies Is, men 2s. Dairy Season Open. Three dairy factories in the Carterton district commenced operations for the current season this morning. At Dalefield the amount of milk received was 600 gallons, at Belvedere 400 gallons, and at Parkvale 600 gallons. From these figures it seems as if the production at each of these factories will be ahead of any previous season. At Belvedere and Dalefield the supply of milk was about equal to that of last season’s opening date. Parkvale showed an increase of 175 gallons. Women's Division. There was a large attendance at the Band Room when the weekly card party was held by the local Women's Division of the Farmers' Union in aid of soldier comforts. A pleasant time was spent and the prizes were won as follows:—Ladies: Miss Rosyth, 1; Mrs Lenihan, 2. Men: Mr Humphries, 1; Mr R. Williams. 2. Personal. Mr D. N. Adams, manager of the Parkvale cheese factory, is laid aside with illness. Mr V. L. Robinson, of Wyndham Street, Carterton, left yesterday afternoon en I’oute for Christchurch where he will judge cattle preparatory to the Addington stock sale. The death occured at Wellington or. Sunday of Mr Hector Bruce, of Johnsonville. at the age of 78 years. The deceased has been ailing for a time and) his demise was not unexpected. Mr G. S. Bruce, of the Bank of New Zealand I staff. Carterton. is a son.
