CROSS OF LORRAINE
CARRIED BY FREE FRENCH FORCES. EMBLEM WITH DUAL SIGNIFICANCE. (fey Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ) (Received This Day, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON. August 5. After Cardinal's Hinsley’s decision to give every Roman Catholic on active service or engaged in defence work a blessed cross, General De Gaulle announced that his forces would carry the Cross of Lorraine in addition to the tricolour. One of General De Gaulle’s colleagues explained that the Cross of Lorraine has a dual significance, because it is the emblem of Joan of Arc’s fight to liberate France and a reminder that the Province of Lorraine, which was freed in 1918. is now under the German yoke. All ships and planes carrying French crews bear the' cross.
