Flashlight’s Good Win. The Homeby Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday attracted much interest. When the field settled down after jumping the first three fences, Nightbound and Slayer showed out from Flashlight with Ballybrit and Padishah in the Slayer, Nightbound and Flash\ght were in line going out of the straight for the final round and went to Cutts’ together, but Slayer, who was on the extreme inside of the fence, ran round the wing, and Ballybrit, running alongside Padishah in last place, crashed. Flashlight then assumed command, but was soon joined by Dauber, and the pair, setting a solid pace led through the back stretch three lengths from Padishah and four lengths to Gold Wren. Trisox fell at the second of the Kennels double, and Nightbound commenced to drift out. Dauber shot to the front five furlongs from home, and led past the half-mile three lengths in front of Flashlight, with a similar gap to Padishah. The two last-named then closed on Dauber, and passed him just before reaching the last fence. Flashlight was the first over just in front of Padishah with Dauber weakening. Flashlight drew away from Padishah early in the run home, and though the latter executed a creditable finishing effort, he had no chance with Flashlight, who completed his task full of running. Dauber was a fair third, with a big gap to Gold Wren and Nightbound.. Flashlight had to be credited with a faultless display throughout, but Padishah was inclined to risk some of his early fences. Dauber appeared to have the race in hand when he turned for home in front, but as he came in very lame, there was some reason for his sudden weakening. Nightbound also returned lame.
Blue Tiger Injured. Though many horsese were out at Hastings on Saturday the only work of any consequence was for the few booked to leave on Tuesday for Riccarton. Owner-trainer W. H. Corlett experienced a stroke of ill-fortune when Blue Tiger over-reached, severing a sinew, necessitating a spell for at least two months,, hence the concellation of his National trip.
Dauber Breaks Down. Dauber broke clown badly two fences from home in the Homeby Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday and there does not seem any chance of him racing again cn the trip. His rider said he was going very well at the time after drawing away from Flashlight and Padishah. Gold Wren was also in a very lame condition after the race, and ho is another doubtful starter at the C.J.C. meeting. Nightbound also broke down in the race and can be counted out in the meantime. New Zealanders in Favour. y At the present time the New Zea-Hand-bred horses Gladynov. Beau Vito. Eeaulivre and Wilson are most in demand for the Caulfield Cup. and Beau Vite and Wilson are most in demand for the Melbourne Cup.
Gladynev and Cup Betting. According to a report from Melbourne, the New Zealand three-year-old Gladynev is stifling the betting on the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Bookmakers are playing safe, but most of the doubles men, have laid him with the best-fancied horses in the Melbourne Cup—Beau Vite, Maikai, True Flight, and Wilson. The last-named, who showed promise as a stayer as a two-year-old. but who could not be got ready for the autumn, is fit again, and has been doing nicely at Caulfield. Eri nation. Judging by the race Erination ran in the Highweight at Rotorua, there cannot be much wrong with him. When he fell at the second last fence in the Great Northern Hurdles on June 1 and came in bleeding at the nose it was thought that he had broken his nose, but apparently the injury was only superficial. Erination is one of the acceptors for the Grand National Steeplechase, in which he ran second last August. Anita Foe’s Rider. W. J. Mudford will have the mount on Anita Foe in the Winter Cup. No Penalties. No penalties are attached to winning at the Christchurch Hunt Club's meeting. A Long Card. Profit from the special meeting at Ascot, Brisbane, on July 10, was £3175. Acceptances were so numerous that a programme of 12 races began at 11 a.m. CHRISTCHURCH HUNT FLASHLIGHT SUCCESSFUL. BRABAZON HANDICAP WON BY OUTSIDER. (By Telegraph-Press Association.)
