GREYTOWN

CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE ENTERTAINMENT OF SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A well attended meeting of the Greytown Citizens’ Committee was held in the Borough Chambers yesterday, to make arrangements for entertaining members of the Third Echelon. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Beu, Brown, Richards, Carter, York, Jury, Bower, Gregor and Messrs Maddison, Eagar and Wiggins. It was announced that the Red Cross Appeal in Greytown totalled £509 7s sd. It was arranged to entertain the soldiers in the Town Hall on Wednesday, August 7, and the following ladies’ committee was appointed to take charge of the catering arrangements: Mesdames Horton, Haigh, Wiggins, Gregor, York, Stevens, Balfour, Shedden, Bull, Knell, Kiernan, Maddison, Johnstone, Thompson and Miss Eagar. An invitation is to be extended to a party of soldiers from Tauherenikau Camp to be present. ST. LUKE’S CHURCH LADIES’ GUILD MEETING. The St. Luke’s Ladies' Guild met in the Parish Hall on Thursday afternoon when Canon Sykes presided. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Barcham and Wiggins. Miss Kidd’s resignation through illhealth was received, with regret. Canon Sykes agreed to act as president for the remainder of the year. Canon Sykes outlined the contents of a letter received from the St. Barnaba’s Babies’ Home. The home was in urgent need of support, he said, but after appealing to the church members, the amount requested from Greytown had been forwarded. Two accounts were passed for payment. Mrs Duff, on behalf of the Guild members, presented Baby Everett with a silver serviette ring. Mrs Everett thanked the members for their kind action. The “wandering shilling parcel” was received by Canon Sykes, 4s being the result. On the motion of Mrs York, seconded by Mrs Burch, it was decided to hold bazaar in the Crown Theatre early in November. Stall-holders were appointed with power to add to their number.
