SALVATION ARMY

VISIT OF TRAINING COLLEGE OFFICERS. SERVICES DURING WEEKEND. The visit to Masterton this weekend of Brigadier Florence Birks and Brigadier Smith with the staff and cadets from the Salvation Army Training College, Wellington, is being looked forward to with great interest and expectation. Brigadier Birks and Brigadier Smith have recently arrived from Australia, having been appointed to the Army s College. Brigadier Birks is the Principal and Brigadier Smith the Training Officer. These officers have had a uni-, que experience in the Army, having been stationed together almost all the years of their service in the Army. They are both gifted speakers, ana have held prominent positions of leadership. Brigadier Florence Birks, who is a most fluent speaker, will give an address tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock entitled "Social Silhouettes.” Mrs G. G. Tolhurst will preside, and it is hoped that the public of Masterton will avail themselves of the opportunity of hearing the brigadier. The party arrived from Wellington this morning, and the cadets with the officers from the college held open-air gatherings around the town this afternoon. Tonight at 8 o'clock the cadets will give a grand programme featuring vocal and instrumental items, tableaux, etc. They will be assisted by Steve Mason on the xylophone and Miss Lora Dutton. L.T.C.L., pianiste. There will be no charge for admission. Special services tomorrow will be conducted by the visitors at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. All are welcome. COMMISSIONER SMITH. The Masterton Corps of the Salvation Army is to be favoured with a visit from Commissioner Evan Smith next Saturday, August 10, when he will conduct a special service in the Army Citadel. The commissioner, who a few weeks ago received a public welcome to Masterton. is a most able speaker, and has been to the fore since ai living in New Zealand with messages over the air and from the public platform. His messages have been most helpful and encouraging to the people in these troublesome times. The Commissioner will give an address next Saturday night at a special service being arranged by Majot I Mahaffie. the Corps Officer of Masterten The Major is desirous of invitingall those interested to attend this service, which commences at 8 p.m.
