Sir Charles and Lady Norwood, of Wellington, have left on a visit to Australia. Mr J. L. McArley has been appointed Registrar of Births and Deaths at Mauriceville. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, has been confined to his home in Northland for the past two days with a slight cold. Mr J. C. D. Mackley, County Clerk, Masterton County Council, returned tp Masterton today after attending Conciliation Council proceedings in Wellington. Mr L. P. Bourke, M.A., of the teaching staff of St. Patrick’s College, Silverstream, has enlisted for service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and has gone into camp for training at Weraroa. Dr T. A. Watson, son of Mr and Mrs T. F. Watson, of Lansdowne, who proceeded to England some time ago to specialise in medical radiology, has gained his diploma, D.M.R.E., having passed the final examination in that subject. Dr Watson is a former pupil of the Wairarapa High School. Consequent upon the resignation of Colonel C. H. Weston, K.C., from the office of president of the New Zealand National Party, the position of head of the Opposition organisation outside the House is now held by Mr A. Gordon. Hamilton. Mr Gordon is comparatively young in years. His business is that of hardware merchant in Hamilton, and thus situated he is able to combine business knowledge with realisation of rural problems. The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr Henry Paltridge, a member of the Waitemata County Council for more than 14 years, and chairman of a number of years, at the age of 68. Mr Paltridge. who was a mine manager, settled in Henderson 26 years ago, and had lived there since. He took a prominent part in the formation of the Henderson Town Board, and was a past president of the Henderson Fruitgrowers’ Association. He was a director of Turners and Growers. Limited, from the time of the firm’s foundation. In his youth, Mr Paltridge represented Thames at football, and was well known as a tennis player. Two of the oldest residents of the Hutt Valley. Mr Benjamin Mudgway, aged 93, and Mr Walter William Mudgway, aged 70. father and con died within hours of each other this week. Mr B. Mudgway died on Tuesday and his son on Wednesday. Mr B. Mudgway purchased the block of land which is now intersected by Jackson Street, Pctone, and bounded on the cast by what is now the dead arm of the Hutt' River. This land, known to all old residents as Mudgway’s farm, was farmed by Mr Mudgwsiy and his family for many years. Since he disposed of it. Mr Mudgway has resided in Lower Hutt. His son had been farming elsewhere since the disposal of the Petonc property. He resided recently in Waiwhetu Road. Lower Hutt.
