GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AND OTHER EVENTS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The first round for the championship and handicap cups was played during the weekend by members of the Tc Wharau Golf Club. The best cards of the day were handed in by Miss Bannister, who netted 66 and N. Foreman. 63. In the championship round Mrs Nitz defeated Miss Bannister; Mrs Schofield beat Mrs J. Bannister; Mrs McGregor beat Mrs Foreman; and Miss Schofield beat Mrs Read. Men: N. Kummer beat S. Gray; M. Paku beat N. Foreman: E. Nitz beat M. Turvey; and R. Weston beat F. McKinstry by default. On August 4 Te Wharau and Tyneside clubs combined will hold an open day on the Tyneside links, the proceeds to go to the Sick and Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. It will be remembered that this competition was postponed some weeks ago on account of bad weather, and i. is to be hoped that all those who were disappointed on that occasion will have a good day’s play. There will be competitions during the day and the entry fee of 3s covers everything, including afternoon tea which will be provided by the ladies.
SOCIAL EVENING MR & MRS KUMMER FAREWELLED On Saturday evening last a highly successful and enjoyable dance was held in the hall, the occasion being a send-ofT to Mr and Mrs P. Kummer, who are leaving "Kummerstein” to reside in Masterton, combined with ar. evening to Mr N. Kummer who is to be married shortly. Over a hundred friends and wellwishers were present which showed the popularity of the guests of the evening. At the supper adjournment Mr S. Gray stated that they were all presen, with very mixed feelings. They were all extremely sorry to be losing Mr and Mrs Kummer from the district, but were very pleased to entertain Mi Norman Kummer on such a special occasion. He asked Mr lan Macrae ic make a presentation to Mr and Mrs Kummer, and in doing so he referreci to the very fine hospitality that has always existed at "Kummerstien,” and to the esteem in which Mr and Mrs Kummer were held in the district. He asked them to accept a standard electric lamp and an electric table lamp as an expression of goodwill from their friends whom they have lived amongst all their lives. Mr McKinstry corroborated the previous speaker's remarks, referring to the popularity which Mr and Mrs Kummer had always enjoyed. Mr Kummer, in his reply, extended to all . present an invitation to visit them when they were settled in their home in Masterton. In presenting a handsome canteen of cutlery to Mr Norman Kummer. Mr Gray said he had been closely associated with their guest for some time and he was sure that the bride-to-be would be welcomed to the district by one and all. He asked him to accept the present on behalf of .both of them from his friends and well-wishers of the district. In replying Mr Kummer thanked all present, for the fine gift and said he expected to see them all at “Kummerstein” when he was settled down. After the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” cheers were given for the guests of the evening.
