DELAY IN PUBLICATION OF NEWS DEFENDED BY MINISTER OF INFORMATION. ENEMY UNAWARE OF SHIP’S IDENTITY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY. July 31. The Minister for Information. Mr A. Duff-Cooper answering questions in the House of Commons in reference to the delay in announcing the sinking of the Lancastria, stated that she was engaged in military operations and it was evident from the German wireless announcement. that the enemy was totally unaware of the identity of the ship that ’had been sunk. It was contrary to the Government’s general policy to announce the loss of individual merchantmen, the number and total tonnage of merchantmen lost being given weekly. The Lancastrians ’tonnage was announced in a statement issued on July 2.
