ATLANTIC RAIDER
ENGAGED BY BRITISH SHIP ENEMY VESSEL DAMAGED BUT NOT SUNK. SEARCH PROCEEDING. The Admiralty reports, Daventry states, an engagement in the South Atlantic between a British armed merchantman and a German raider. Ihe raider was not sunk but is known to have been damaged. There were nine casualties on the British ship. The search for the raider is proceeding. LUCKY SHOT ENABLES RAIDER TO GET AWAY. SPEED OF ALCANTARA REDUCED. (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, July 31. It is officially announced that a raider in the South Atlantic was damaged in an engagement with his Majesty ship Alcantara, of 22,209 tons, a former Royal Mail Line vessel. The raider escaped after the Alcantara's speed had been reduced by a lucky shot. The British casualties were two men killed and seven wounded. It is known that the damage to the raider affects her fighting efficiency. The Alcantara’s damage is slight. Search for the raider is continuing. Immediately upon sighting the raider, which is a fast converted merchantman mounting four guns on each broadside, the Alcantara engaged the enemy, which turned away when hit, using smoke-floats. Captain J. G. Ingram, D. 5.0., is the Commander of the Alcantara.
