CARTERTON
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presiding. There were also present Councillors W. A. Hart. E. McKenzie, H. Mortenson. L. M. Clark. C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, O. W. Wolters. Jos Udy and the Town Clerk (Mr P. A. Cole). An apology for absence was received from Councillor R. A. Copeland. Crs H. Mortenson and O. W. Wolters were authorised to sign the rate roll. The treasurer reported a credit balance in the district fund account as follows: Bank of New Zealand, £445 4s 7d. Post Office Savings Bank £1,419 11s 9d, a total of £1,864 16s 4d. The gas works account was in credit £253 15s 3d. Accounts amounting to £747 18s 9d in the District Fund account, and £215 15s Id in the Gasworks account were passed for payment. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote in regard to the estimates for 1940/41. The Carterton Borough would be required to pay £678, which sum is £l3 less than last year. Mr Trueman. Building and Sanitary Inspector for the borough, forwarded his quarterly report which showed that the health of the borough as a whole was very satisfactory. The Wellington Education Board wrote advising that they were prepared to grant a subsidy towards the new swimming baths £1 for £1 up to £2OO on condition that the pupils attending the school had free use of the baths at all times. The letter was received. Mrs L. K. Page was granted a refund on rates paid on urban farm lands. It was resolved that the council purchase eight copies of the Wellington Provincial History from the Wellington Provincial Council and that a copy be given to the public library and one to the Carterton School, and that the remaining copies be offered for sale. Mr A. W. Robertson wrote asking for assistance to remove his boundary fence back to the road boundary on Richmond Road. It was resolved that as soon as a man was available from the borough staff that the assistance required be given.. The Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote relative to the Local Authorities' Officers’ Award. It was decided that Messrs E. P. Norman, C. L. Bishop, H. L. Jenkins. H. J. Bishop and Eaton Hurley represent the council at the conference. It was resolved that the "Times-Age" Company, Masterton, be given a share of the Borough advertising. The manager of the Regent Picture Company wrote asking permission to erect a suitable publicity board on the borough yard section in High Street. It was resolved to submit the matter to the Works Committee for a report. Cr Hart brought up the question of persons who were on the Social Security. and suggested that the Minister be written to asking if subsidised labour could be procured for' work that required doing in the borough. 'Cr Mortenson thought that this labour could be absorbed in re-forming and putting into a thorough state of repair footpaths that required attention throughout the borough. The Mayor suggested that the pipe line north of the reservoir could also be put into better order by means of subsidised labour. The Clerk was authorised to write to the Minister in connection with the suggestion. It was resolved that a gate be erected at the entrance of the borough yard in High Street. The Clerk was instructed to write to a resident notifying him that refuse must not be put into borough pits without authority, and to point out it was against the law to do so. iMINIATURE RIFLES s. WEEKLY COMPETITIONS. The weekly competitions of the Carterton Miniature Rifle Club was held last evening, the results being as follow: — Club aggregate and Press Cup: R. Hawker 99, C. J. Torrey was the winner of Messrs Witcombe and Caldwell’s Cup with a score of 100 in the shoot-off. EGG MARKETING INTERESTING ADDRESSES. There was a large attendance including a number of ladies at St Mark's Parish Hall last evening to listen to an addresses by Mr McConnor. of the Internal Marketing Board, and Mr A. J. Severn, a member of the Poultry Eoard. The new regulations regarding egg marketing were explained and the co-operation of poultry keepers was requested in connection, with the scheme. The regulations were gone through clause by clause and copies were distributed to those present. Questions were invited and satisfactorily answered. Mr W. F. Stent, president of the Poultry Board, presided and poultry farmers were present from Greytown Martinborough, Mastertcn and the Carterton district. GIRL GUIDES MEETING OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee of the Carterton Girl Guides was held yester-
day afternoon. Mrs R. N. Campbell presiding. There were also present Mesdames Gustofson (secretary), R. P. Wakelin, G. W. Busby. I. Sexton and L. J. Fairbrother. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames M. J. Parker and W. S. Steven. One new member was elected to the committee. A discussion took place relative to the raising of funds to pay off the debt of the local association, and it was decided to hold a copper trail and dispose of a dinner. The copper trail will take place on Friday, August 9. GOLF LADIES’ CLUB MEDAL. The following is the draw for a club medal round to be played on the Carterton links on Saturday next: — No 7 tee: Mrs Orr and Mrs Candy. Booth, Mrs Robinson and Miss Armstrong, Miss McFarlane and Miss Freer. Mrs Pointon and Miss Peters. Miss Hamer and Miss I. Corlet, Miss J. Orr and Miss V. Corlet. No 16 tee: Miss Lawrence and Miss Shankland, Mrs Goodin and Mrs Hindley, Mrs Gustofson and Miss Lane, Miss Beaven a bye. Miss Smart and Mrs Murray will be in charge of the afternoon tea.
