PRODUCER GAS PLANT

FIRST CAR IN WAIRARAPA FITTED. FAST SPEED REACHED WITHOUT DIFFICULTY. A Masterton car has now been fitted with a producer gas plant. Messrs Levin and Co Ltd have the distinction of owning the first motor vehicle in the Wairarapa to be so fitted. The work was carried out locally. A "Times-Age" representative had the opportunity this morning of trying out the running of the car under the new motive power. Once the plant had "picked up,” there was no difficulty in reaching a speed of 50 to 60 miles an hour and a remarkably good acceleration was obtainable. The Lansdowne and Opaki rises were taken without trouble on lop gear. Smooth running was evident. One advantage of the producer gas is that it does not heat the engine ti: the same extent as petrol. Although the system entails some little attention there is a considerable saving in running costs, and its advantages in a time of national emergency are obvious. Messrs T. Borthwick and Sons Ltd are having a truck fitted and two of Mr Snelgrove's buses are also being dealt with, besides two motor vehicles belonging to a Greytown business man. Messrs Levin and Co Ltd tire distric’ agents for the producer gas plant fitted or being lilted to these vehicles.
