CHURCH FIRE
TOTARA SHINGLES 75 YEARS OLD. REPLACEMENT PROBABLE. The Masterton Fire Brigade was occupied for nearly two hours yesterday afternoon in attending to the outbreak of fire in the shingles on the roof of the Methodist Church. Although the fire itself was quickly extinguished, on account of the inflammable nature of the shingles every care had to be taken to ensure that sparks were effectively put out. The damaged portion of the roof was later covered with a tarpaulin. It is of interest to recall that the northern end of the church was erected in 1865, and an addition was put on in 1885. The totara shingles on the older portion, which was the part concerned in the five yesterday, had never leaked throughout the 75 years they had seen service, until yesterday. The same could not be said, however, for the rimu shingles on the newer portion of the church. It appears probable that the totara shingles at least will have to be replaced with some other material.
