CARTERTON

RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF LOCAL BRANCH. (“Times-Age" Special.) A meeting of the Carterton branch of the Red Cross Society was held in the Borough Council offices, the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) being in the chair. There were also present Mesdames R. N. Campbell. F. A. Cole. H. R. Every, C.-A. Chennells. L. J. Fairbrother H. Knutson. W. C. M. Sorensen and A. F. Stubbs, Mr C. C. Callander and Miss C. Berrill. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Beaven, Mrs Peacock. Mrs J. Udy and Miss O. VZolters. Accounts amounting to £lO 17s were passed for payment. The treasurer reported that the Sick. Wounded and Distress Fund Appeal amounted to £1165 Ils for the Carterton district. Amounts received since\ the last meeting were: Scout committee £lO 6s, subscriptions £2 ss, donations £1 19s, Carterton R.S.A. £2O (half proceeds from the ball). Young Farmers’ Club £3 Bs, Dalefield School Children £3. Bridge Club 4s, per Mrs R. Banks £l. The secretary was instructed to thank Mrs Lang for her donation of a ladies’ handbag, which had been won by Mrs R. Madden; also the Mothers’ League. W omen’s Institute and W.DF.U. for gifts of knitted garments, etc. The branch has forwarded to the headquarters at Wellington 62 balaclavas, 60 hot water bottle covers. 14 pairs of socks, 8 bedsocks, 2 pullovers. 8 scarves, 18 small towels, 12 large throw overs and 60 jug covers; to the Trentham Camp. 18 balaclavas. 3 scarves. 5 pairs of socks, 2 pairs mittens; knitted for Air Force Relations. 18 scarves, 28 balaclavas, 11 pullovers, 2 pairs of socks, 28 pairs of gloves, 22 pairs of mittens. Six large parcels of good clothing have also been .forwarded to the Headquarters. Mrs R. N. Campbell reported that the examinations for the First Aid Classes would take place in three weeks time, when successful candidates would then take their V.A.D. training of sixty hours in the public hospitals. ’ FAREWELL GATHERING MR & MRS P. OLIVER ENTERTAINED. At a gathering at the Parkvale School on Friday evening the opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Percy Oliver who will leave Parkvale shortly to take up their residence at Whiteman’s Valley. Mr E. Rose stated that their guests had lived in Parkvale and Kokotau for some years and had been particularly good settlers. He asked Mr and Mrs Oliver to accept a travelling rug and two cushions from the settlers. Mr Oliver suitably returned thanks. PARCEL EVENING HAPPY EVENING AT DALEFIELD. The Dalefield Hall was filled on Saturday evening when the residents of the district and visitors from other centres gathered to honour a bride-to-be. Miss Mabel Miller, who is shortly to be married to Mr Trevor Hooper, a popular resident of Dalefield. Dancing was enjoyed throughout the evening to music supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton (Carterton) and Mr Harding, of Masterton. Extras were played by Mrs Rogers and Messrs G. Challis and A. Morris. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs G. Beere. At |an appropriate interval Mr W. Press, on behalf of the residents, asked Miss Miller to accept and open the many parcels, which she did amid applause. Mr Trevor Hooper returned thanks on behalf of Miss Miller. Those present then sang “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” Mr M. Knutson, captain of the Dalefield Hockey Club said Mr Trevor Hooper was a valued member of the club and he asked Mr Hooper to accept a seagrass chair. Mr Hooper thanked his club members for their gift. Mr Knutson said he had a further presentation to make and this also to a member of the Dalefield Hockey Club. Mr Gordon Tildesley would early in August be married and he asked Mr Tildesley to accept from the club a beaten copper fire screen. Mr Tildesley returned thanks. Supper was provided and dancing resumed until midnight when the gathering broke up with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. Mr V. J. Aston was an efficient M.C. GOLF SATURDAY’S COMPETITIONS. Owing to the very inclement weather very few cards were handed in on Saturday. The best were: Miss Freer 99-27-72; Mrs Harrington 99-17-82; Miss M. Stuart 100-19-83; Mrs Colson 103-19-84. G. Hart, with 2 down, returned the best card in the bogey competition on Saturday. Hill and Hughes Buttons: H. Dudson and W. Moroney (sub for Barnett), holders, lost to D. Smith and J. Lawrente 6/5. Personal. Lieutenant R. N. Campbell, of Carterton, is among the appointments to the New Zealand military forces and is gazetted as attached to the 4th Battery. 2nd Field Regiment, New Zealand Artillery. Football Club Ball. At the King’s Theatre. Carterton, tonight, the annual ball of the Carterton Football Club will be held. The arrangements are complete for the function. Visitors are expected from far and near and the ball should go down in local history as one of the most successful gatherings ever held in the district.

Dairy Season. Next week dairy factories in this district will commence operations for the season. Dalefield will be the first, followed by Parkvale. Junior Football Final. Play in the final junior championship game between Carterton and Martinborough was chiefly confined to the forwards. Neither side' crossed the other’s line to score, the points coming from two penalty goals kicked by Jackson for Carterton, and one registered by Hancock for Martinborough, near the end of the game.
